When you first begin your dental assistant career, you will most likely be excited. Every day will be a new adventure, and you will find it very rewarding. However, working with your patients every day may cause some stress, and may eventually lead to burnout. Here are some ways to avoid and deal with this predicament and continue on your career path to a better future.

What is Burnout and What Does this Mean for the Dental Assistant?

While stress is bound to occur in any workplace, when it causes you to develop job burnout that affects your dental assistant career, it can be so much worse. Burnout is the feeling you have when you no longer feel happy getting up in the morning and going into work. You might not feel like you are doing your job correctly, or you may feel as if you are wasting your time with your dental assistant career.

Generally, burnout occurs in cycling stages, which means one week you may love your dental assistant career, and the next week you may wish you worked nowhere near a dental office. This type of stress takes a toll on both your body, your emotions, and your dental assistant career. Some of the symptoms you may experience include:

Irritability

Headaches

Exhaustion

High blood pressure

Exhaustion

Change in the way you eat

You may experience feelings of hopelessness, resentfulness, and even become depressed. This type of stress can affect the way you not only interact with coworkers and patients, but the way you act toward those outside of the workplace.

Steps for Avoiding Burnout in Your Dental Assistant Career

In order to successfully avoid burnout, you need to make sure you are taking care of both your body and your mind. Taking care of your body includes:

Visiting the doctor for regular checkups

Eating healthy meals

Exercising

Getting enough sleep

Taking care of your mind includes:

Provide yourself with realistic goals and strive to meet them

Find out what makes you mad, irritated, or upset and try to avoid those situations

Using appropriate coping skills

Learn how and when to say “no”

Forgive yourself when you don’t have the energy or time to reach a goal

You also need to maintain a social life. Don’t shut yourself off from those who are willing to help you overcome the stress from your dental assistant career. Take time to have fun with your friends, family, and coworkers to help reduce stress.

If you have done your best to avoid burnout, but are still experiencing some of the symptoms, speak to your supervisor. He or she will be able to help you deal with these problems. You may need to take a few days off for a vacation, or you may need more help handling all of the responsibilities of your dental assistant career.

Take the time to take care of yourself, and it will be easier to avoid stress and burnout in your dental assistant career.

Finish Your Dental Assistant Training in 10 Weeks?

Starting your dental assistant training may be the first step in beginning your bright new career, but what about those 10 week dental assistant training classes? Can they provide you with enough education to actually secure a position after your dental assistant training is complete?

Are Fast Track, 10 Week Dental Assistant Training Courses Legitimate?

Here’s a familiar scenario that is occurring in every field, not just dental assistant training. Industries with careers that require certification or licensing as opposed to college degrees are being taken advantage of, by schools that offer the “too good to be true” fast track to career success.

These so-called training programs take advantage of the fact that individuals desiring to enter the field are often more interested in the fastest way to employment, instead of making sure they receive the proper dental assistant training in order to truly qualify for the position. If you are considering a 10 week course (or any dental assistant training), be sure the dental assistant school is accredited by The American Dental Association (ADA). Their website can be found at ADA.org.

Disturbing Findings Online for Dental Assistant Training

Although we can’t pinpoint every education scam (and there are plenty), we can provide you with sound advice for choosing the right dental assistant training. First of all, if the school or training program is not approved by the American Dental Association, you shouldn’t take the course. So, how do schools that advertise and provide dental assistant training that aren’t actually accredited get away with it? Bottom line, it comes down to clever marketing and even more clever wording. Anyone can offer a training program. If you like to cook, for instance, you are more than welcome to offer private cooking classes. You may advertise in your community newspaper or even on your local cable station. If you follow sanitary regulations and obtain proper licensure, you can even charge for the training you provide. Now, if an individual decides to take your courses, pay your fees, but then isn’t qualified to become a gainfully employed chef, is that your fault? I think you understand the loophole in the system through this example.

Here is something disturbing we recently found online:

Question found in Yahoo Search – Are the 10 week dental assistant training courses a scam?

The individual asking the question went further to explain, “I’m debating whether to take a 10 week dental assistant training course. It is offered by a dentist in my area, along with other individuals who work in the field. They say that I can use their dental assistant training to get a job anywhere in our area? Is this actually good enough?”

Answer from same Yahoo Search – The individual who responded to the question advised to check out the credentials of the program before enrolling.

Although the advice given by the responder is true, it is extremely alarming to think that dentists or professionals who currently work in the field of dentistry are offering dental assistant training programs and passing them off as being sufficient to work in the field.

If you see something like this offered in your area, the first thing you should do is check with the ADA.org website. The second thing you should do is report the “dental assistant training program” to your local or state dental board or at least to the Better Business Bureau. Any program that is teaching skills that have to do with the medical field should be scrutinized by proper associations and organizations, to prevent potential students from being duped by their claims.

Most accredited dental assistant training programs take anywhere from 9-12 months to complete. Many are offered by junior colleges.

Bottom line here? Don’t waste your money on dental assistant training courses that will not, and CAN not offer the certification or licensing necessary to start your career as a dental assistant.

A rewarding career as a dental assistant begins with the right dental assistant training.

The number one step is to use preventative measures that will help to avoid a great deal of careless problems. Avoid taking short cuts for any procedure and be completely aware of the patient’s needs at all times. This is no time to be checking your text messages or fantasizing about the latest Grey’s Anatomy episode.

If you’ve never been in an emergency situation then you may be thinking “What’s the worst that could happen in a dentist’s office?” Just like in a hospital or doctor’s office, there are always things that could go awry, some of which are life-threatening. Again, pay attention to the patient because if medical professionals are called in you will be required to inform them of the events leading up to the crisis. This will help them to evaluate the situation quickly and accurately.

Has Your Dental Assistant Training Prepared You for Emergencies?

Allergic Reactions: People have been known to react severely to certain medications used during dental procedures. These are often a result of unknown allergies. Knowing how to perform CPR is vital if the patient stops breathing. You may be required to monitor vital signs for some offices.

Choking: Yes people do choke on extracted teeth, dental instruments, or any number of items being used. Because they are under anesthesia they are not conscious enough to move something from their airway and it is up to you to know how to properly remove it. Quite honestly this should be mandatory for dental assistant training.

Fainting: While this may not seem to be a life-threatening situation it is important to do one thing first. If they are standing when they faint then try to catch them. Evaluate the reason behind the fainting. If it’s because of anxiety then all that is required is making them comfortable. Low blood sugar or high blood pressure is a medical emergency that needs to be addressed and a physician contacted.

Anxiety Attacks: These often occur in any patient that has an overwhelming fear of the dentist or doctor’s offices. You can aid a patient by getting them to focus on the fact that they are in a safe and secure environment in which they are in control. If they are beginning to hyperventilate then help them practice diaphragm breathing where they inhale and exhale slowly filling their entire lungs.

Eye Damage: Your dental assistant training probably didn’t cover how to work the eye wash station in your dental office. Become acquainted with it because you never know when a fluid, solution, extraction, or dental tool may be dropped or ricochet into the patient’s eyes.

Existing Health Issues: Not every emergency is directly related to the dental procedure being performed. Patients sometimes have a stroke, blood clot, or heart attack when in the chair. You need to know basic medical emergency care.

Any medical emergency: You may not be the one assisting with the patient experiencing the emergency, but you still have a responsibility. Your job is to keep the remaining patients calm and informed of what specifics, if any, that they need to know. Consult the office list of emergency medical numbers and procedures and make any necessary phone calls.

A quality dental assistant training program will prepare you for certain emergencies, but you’ll have to be constantly aware once you enter into your new career. No dental assistant training program can fully prepare you for every situation, and anyone working in the dental or medical field should know that anything can happen.

More and more individuals are looking to enhance the look and feel of their gums and teeth, making this a exciting career choice. If you are interested in beginning cosmetic dental assistant training, here is some information that you may want.

The Job Duties of a Cosmetic Dental Assistant

Cosmetic dental assistants work with dentists in a variety of ways. Many of the tasks that are performed by cosmetic dental assistants are the same as regular dental assistant activities. These may include:

Setting appointments

Greeting patients and preparing them for the dentist

Handing the dentist instruments during surgery

Filing and supply ordering

Scheduling and billing

These assistants may also be engaged in specialized duties, directly related to the cosmetic niche. Although they will not be able to perform most of these responsibilities by themselves, they may assist dentists with the following procedures.

Enamel Shaping- Involves improving the shape and contour of a patient’s enamel or removing it altogether

Educational Requirements To Become a Cosmetic Dental Assistant

While some cosmetic dental assistants may have the opportunity to learn their job duties while on the job, most attend some form of dental assistant training prior to working in this field. Many educational programs are available, and most of the time, assistants choose to either earn a diploma or an associate’s degree in this field.

Classes at a formal dental assistant training program generally include both studying inside of the classroom and laboratory work. This type of education prepares students for work in a real dental office.

After formal dental assistant training, most states, although not all, require cosmetic dental assistant to obtain certification and licensure before they can perform most of the job duties that are required in this field. Even those assistants who do not take any type of dental assistant training can take the test for certification once they have completed at least two years of on-the-job training. In order for dental assistants to renew their certification, they will have to continue their education and earn a certain number of credits every year, though.

Average Pay for Cosmetic Dental Assistants

Payscale.com reports that hourly paid cosmetic dental assistants earn about $14.62 to start. The actual pay rate will vary, depending on the location of the work, the required job duties, and the education and experience of the assistant.

When you complete dental assistant training for cosmetic dentistry, you will have the opportunity to improve the smiles of others while earning a decent living in the health care field.

This can be beneficial to you for job security or if you are looking to increase your annual income.

One of the ways to increase your responsibilities and value as a dental assistant is by earning a permit in sedation. Recent changes in allowable dental assistant functions and requirements are pushing in the direction of a separate licensure requirement for sedation for every state. If you are interested in becoming a dental sedation assistant, here is what you’ll need to be aware of:

Dental Sedation Assistant Job Description

Dental sedation assistants work closely with dentists to help treat and monitor patients who are undergoing some type of anesthesia for a procedure, whether it is through intravenous sedation, oral sedation, or inhalation sedation. Some of the duties you, as a dental sedation assistant, can perform are:

Monitoring vitals of the patient while he or she is under sedation

Drawing, measuring, and administering medications and fluids after the dentist has given the patient the first dose of medication

Removing the patient’s IV after the procedure is completed

When the patient is first sedated and throughout the entire procedure, the dentist must be present and must monitor all of the activity performed by the assistant.

Obtaining Your Permit After Dental Assistant Training

When you decide that you want to become a dental sedation assistant, there are strict guidelines that you must follow in order to obtain your permit. Before you can consider applying for a permit, though, you have to first undergo your dental assistant training. The steps that follow this training will include:

Working at least a full year as a regular dental assistant

Taking all health classes required by your particular state dental board, which could include CPR and infection control.

Your state may require you to take a class that reviews the laws and ethics of dentistry in your state.

When you have completed all of the classes required by your state, you will then have to take a course in dental sedation. These courses are generally over 100 hours long. You will not be allowed to start dental sedation courses until after you have worked as a regular dental assistant for at least six months.

After completing all of these courses, you will then have to take a state certified exam.

You will then have to submit your fingerprints to both the FBI and the Department of Justice. Any arrest records will be investigated and it will be determined whether you are able to apply for a dental sedation assistant permit.

The first three courses on CPR, infection control, and the practice of dentistry must be taken within the first year of your employment as a dental assistant. Once you have completed all of these requirements for this type of dental assistant training, you will be able to apply to be a dental sedation assistant.

To be Registered or Not to be Registered… That is the Question

If you want to obtain a dental sedation assistant permit, you are not required to be a registered dental assistant, but there are several advantages to becoming one. Not only will the requirements for certification and re-certification help you prepare more thoroughly to become a dental sedation assistant, but you will also be able to perform more job duties than an uncertified dental assistant. Your ability to do more within the dental office will increase your job security and allow for higher paying salaries. Here are some of the duties you will be able to carry out:

Use computer-aided design system and x-ray to capture images of a patient’s teeth

Prepare the patient’s teeth for the bonding material

Apply the bonding material

Adjust a patient’s braces, bands, and archwires

Remove any excess cement around a patient’s braces

The requirement to become a dental sedation assistant will vary from state to state because each state has its own dental board. After completing your dental assistant training, contact your state board to see what the specific requirements are for you to obtain your permit to become a dental sedation assistant.

Before deciding that you have chosen the best dental assistant training path available, do your homework. You might be making a mistake that will cause you to sacrifice high paying job opportunities in the future.

Attending Unaccredited Dental Assistant Training Programs

Each day we see commercials and receive advertisements in the mail that promote some new dental assistant training school. Most of these schools promise low per credit hour tuition rates, low-interest financing, and job placement. The problem is, many of these schools are not actually accredited. Can they really do that? Yes, actually they can.

As long as a dental assistant training program “eludes” to providing you with the correct education, it is not a crime. The next time you see one of those dental assistant training school commercials, carefully listen to the wording. They won’t claim to provide you with certification and they won’t claim to be accredited. All in all, if you perceive them as such, they have used their clever marketing techniques well. That’s the way they look at it anyway.

Even if a dental assistant training school does claim to have accreditation, find out the name of the accreditation board and make sure they are nationally recognized. If they are not nationally recognized many future employers and other accredited institutions will not take your résumé or applications seriously. Worse, the credit hours that you have completed may not transfer to another institute, meaning you will have to start over in order to obtain additional certifications or degrees.

The job placement services that claim to have found a high number of students jobs might make you overlook the lack of accreditation, but you must make sure you have all the facts. Some schools advertise placement numbers from their best year, omitting the fact that they have had much lower placement success rates in recent years.

Taking Dental Assistant Training that Doesn’t Offer an Internship Program

Dental assistant training is more than reading books and spending time in class. The best schools encourage students to find internships, but many students make the mistake of ignoring internship opportunities. Even if a dental assistant training school or program does not require students to find internships, you should try to find a dental office willing to work with students.

A dental assistant internship will give you a chance to put what you have learned during class into practice. Completing an internship program will prepare you for working full-time in a real dental office once your dental assistant training is complete. Also, including an internship on your resume will put you one step above dental assistants who have only gone through in class training.

Skipping Out on Vital Dental Assistant Training, Such as Labs and Lectures

Dental assistant training schools usually offer night and weekend courses to accommodate working students. If you are a student who is juggling work, school, and a family skipping a few classes might be tempting. Even if you are exhausted you should always go to class or, if you have to miss a class, you should try to make up the hours missed by asking to attend the class on one of the days that you usually do not attend school.

Missing lectures and, more importantly, labs could prevent you from learning important details that may help you pass a certification exam or perform tasks when you become a dental assistant. The average dental training course load packs a great deal of information into a few long classes. Failing to attend even two laboratory demonstration or lecture could even cause you to fall behind so much that you do not pass the course.

We hope this information has been useful as you pursue a rewarding and exciting career through quality dental assistant training.

Here are some excellent interview tips that will help you land your first job.

Before the Interview

Prior to your interview, you need to prepare yourself. The first interview you have will most likely be a face-to-face chat with either a dentist or another employee at the dental office. Before you go in, consider these tips:

Calm your nerves by practicing answering questions in front of a mirror, or better yet, with some of your friends.

Gather all of the information you need. Make sure your resume contains all of your skills, knowledge, and experience. Be sure you have gathered your letters of recommendation as well, if you have any.

Pick out the right clothes. Although the dental practice will require you to wear some type of uniform if you are accepted as an employee, the clothes you wear for your interview should be professional looking. Try to wear clothes that are not flamboyant, and avoid wearing an excessive amount of jewelry.

Before you enter the room for your interview, make sure your cell phone is turned off.

Arrive approximately ten minutes early for the interview.

During the Interview

Of course, greet your interviewer with a polite smile and a firm handshake. Next come the questions. Don’t stress…Instead, listen to each question completely so you will be able to answer confidently and correctly. Some of the most frequent questions you should be prepared to answer include:

Can you tell me about yourself?

What are you greatest strengths and weaknesses?

Can you work with a team?

Have you been previously employed as a dental assistant?

What did you like about your last job or dislike about it?

What can you offer our practice?

As a dental assistant, it is important for you to show your potential employer that you have the correct dental assistant training for the job as well as communication skills. Part of your job as a dental assistant includes explaining procedures to patients and making them feel at ease. Make sure you inform your interviewer of:

The amount of dental assistant training you have had

Any operations you have been trained to perform without supervision

Show off Your Dental Assistant Training With a Working Interview

If the dental practice is interested in employing you, they may ask you to take part in a working interview to see if you would work well with the current employees and view your dental assistant training in action.

During this type of interview, you will observe and take part in the day-to-day activities of the dental practice. The dentist will judge your dental skills, your communication skills, and will observe the way you interact with patients. These working interviews last anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of weeks. Most of the time, potential employees who take part in working interviews are paid for their time, but if you are asked to participate without pay, always be aware of the length of time involved. A working interview can really be your chance to show off your dental assistant training skills, so don’t focus on the fact that it may be unpaid. Put your best foot forward and nail that interview!

Your dental assistant training has given you the skills to succeed in the dental world. Use your dental assistant training skills along with these interview tips to land the job of your dreams today.

How about 4 wheels and a mobile dental office? If you are looking for an exciting career that takes you outside the box, you may want to consider a career as a mobile dental assistant.

Think Outside of the Box- Unique Opportunities For Dental Assistants

Dental assistant training does not have to begin and end with employment in a traditional dental office. Once you have your dental assistant training under your belt, you can work almost anywhere in the healthcare industry. Positions are available at nursing homes, hospitals, health care facilities, schools, and even with insurance companies. One of the most unique positions out there for the up and coming dental assistant is a position on a mobile dental unit.

What is a Mobile Dental Assistant?

While many dental assistant perform normal job duties in a public or private dental office, mobile dental assistant take their job on the road. As a mobile dental assistant, you will typically provide the same kind of care that any other assistant in this field would, including preparing and sterilizing dental tools, suctioning fluids to keep a patient’s mouth dry during a procedure, and doing paperwork. In addition to your regular duties, you may also be required to drive the mobile unit, so your employer may require you to have a current state driver’s license.

Mobile dental assistants typically work with populations that can not come into a dentist office. You may visit schools, nursing homes, shelters, or private neighborhoods and offer your dental services. Many mobile units are staffed by volunteers that supply proper dental care to children and families that can not afford it.

How to Become a Mobile Dental Assistant

Working in a mobile unit requires the right kind of dental assistant training. You can obtain this kind of training through college courses, both on campus and online. These courses will prepare you for any type of unique job opportunity that you may find by offering you both clinical, lab, and classroom experiences.

Classes that take place at community colleges or online may vary in length and degree. Online courses generally require less than one year of participation, during which time you will receive a certificate as a dental assistant. Community colleges may offer longer courses that will provide you with an associate’s degree in this subject.

Some dental assistants receive their training on the job. They may work in an office setting for a few years to gain enough experience, and then transfer to or volunteer for a mobile dental unit.

Before you can become a dental assistant, most states require that you take a certification test and become licensed in your particular state. If the mobile unit travels to more than one state, you may be required to take separate certification exams for each state you will be practicing in.

New and exciting opportunities pop up every day within many different careers, and with the right dental assistant training, you can be prepared for any new opportunity that helps you further your career as a dental assistant.

If you are currently employed as a dental assistant and all you’ve got under your belt is on-the-job training, you may be setting yourself up for failure. Even if you are happy with your current position, what are your career growth opportunities without additional training?

No one wants to think about losing their job, but the best defense against this is to be prepared. By continuing your dental assistant training, even while you are currently employed in the field, you’ll essentially be taking out an insurance policy to protect yourself against changes in the economy. This is especially true if you are currently employed with a smaller dental office, or an older dentist who may retire one day and choose to close his practice.

Other benefits to continuing your dental assistant training include the following:

Become an Expanded Duties Dental Assistant

An expanded duties dental assistant, or licensed dental assistant, is able to perform more procedures in a dental office than a regular dental assistant can. As a result, these dental assistants command higher salary and have more career opportunities. According to PayScale.com, the average expanded duties dental assistant earns between $12 and $23 per hour.

To become an expanded duties assistant extra education is needed, along with experience. Expanded duties dental assistants require credentials that are determined by your state. The credentials can include a CDA (Certified Dental Assistant), a CDPA (Certified Dental Preventive Assistant), a CDPMA (Certified Dental Practice Management Administrator, or a Bachelors Degree in this field.

Each certification will require a state exam, which is designed to measure how competent you are in the duties you will be performing. Some of the expanded duties you will be able to perform as an expanded duties dental assistant include coronal polishing, topical anesthetic, sealants, and topical fluoride treatments.

State Requirements Can Be Confusing

While it would be much easier for dental assistants if the requirements, exams, and duties were the same across the board for every state, this is not the case. Each state has its own rules and certification requirements. If you are planning on working in more than one state, you need to be sure you’ve completed all the requirements and exams for each state you plan to practice in.

Many states do not acknowledge higher education in dental assisting unless the program has been accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation. For this reason, it is important to check your state requirements before you begin your education.

You can locate information about your state’s requirements by visiting the Dental Assisting National Board website and clicking on your state’s link. This will allow you to find out what you can expect on your exams, what type of education you’ll need to perform expanded duties, and how much experience as a dental assistant you must have before you can be licensed.

Whether you are interested in furthering your dental assistant career or securing your future just in case something happens, you may want to consider taking some dental assistant training courses. You will have a better job outlook, the opportunity to earn higher pay, and be more valuable in your dental assistant career.
